Compression bandage for life-threatening bleeding

A tourniquet is a compression bandage used to quickly stop life-threatening arterial bleeding in an arm or leg. In the case of major, pulsing bleeding, life can be at risk within minutes – having a tourniquet in your first aid kit can save a life.

The tourniquet is used only in emergencies, when direct pressure isn't enough. It works by temporarily cutting off blood flow to the injured body part, preventing further blood loss until professional care is available.

⚠️ Important

A tourniquet should only be used for life-threatening bleeding and is intended as a temporary measure until further care is available.
For safe handling and correct use, training is recommended, for example FAE for Safety's "Säker Ridsport".

How to use a tourniquet

1. Place: Position the tourniquet 5–10 cm above the wound (avoiding a joint if possible).
2. Tighten: Turn the windlass until the bleeding stops – it needs to be tight enough to stop the arterial blood flow.
3. Lock: Secure the windlass in the tightened position.
4. Check: If the bleeding continues – tighten a little more.
5. Note the time: Record when the tourniquet was applied – important for medical staff.
6. Monitor: Keep watch to make sure the injured person doesn't remove the bandage due to pain.

When an ambulance or other care arrives, inform them when and why the tourniquet was applied, along with the exact time.
